Creating a custom emission source

Created by Sanders Lazier, Modified on Tue, 7 Feb, 2023 at 4:58 PM by Sanders Lazier

All of your emissions are tied to a source. The categorization of your activities by sources will allow you to understand your emissions much more thoroughly, which contributes to more targeted solutions.

Beyond the traditional office energy sources (Electricity, Natural Gas, Diesel, Heavy Oil, Propane Gas), we understand that there are custom sources. Some examples of custom sources include:

  • Drill
  • Delivery Vehicle
  • Boiler

Creating a custom source

  • Select the Sources tab
  • Select "Create New"
  • Enter your source name
  • Select if the data entry items for this source will be date ranges
    • Some usage items occur over a period of time, i.e a monthly utility bill, whereas discrete purchases, such as a flight, require a single date.
  • Select if there will be monthly inputs for this source
    • Some sources require monthly inputs, for example: Monthly Energy Bills. If you would like reminders to enter that data monthly select Yes.
  • Select if you have operational control
    • If you have operational control it means you have the full authority to implement operating policies. Examples of this would be sources that your company owns (company fleets, planes, delivery cars, offices, etc)
  • Select the Date when the source became active, in other words when it started being used.
  • Select a Category
    • Read more about categories (here) and scopes (here)
  • Select the location of the sources
    • This can be an office or a worksite. For mobile sources there is no location required.
    • If this source belongs to a new location you can create that location using the "add new" button.
  • Select next
  • Select an Emission Factor
    • An emission factor is a coefficient which allows us to convert activity data into GHG emissions. It is the average emission rate of a given source, relative to units of activity or process/processes (e.g  0.00018 tonnes of c02 per passenger km).
    • If your source requires a unique emission factor that you cannot see in our default list you can request a new emission factor. Read more here

You have successfully created your custom source and you can start adding data against this source either through individual activity items or through bulk upload.
